오늘의 묵상: 새 언약 백성의 두 징표—하나님의 영과 말씀
이사야 59:21 (새번역) 주님께서 말씀하신다. “내가 그들과 맺은 나의 언약은 이러하다. 너의 위에 있는 나의 영과 너의 입에 담긴 나의 말이, 이제부터 영원토록, 너의 입과 너의 자손의 입과 또 그 자손의 자손의 입에서 떠나지 않을 것이다.” 주님께서 하신 말씀이다.
하나님께서 새 언약을 약속하실 때, 우리에게 우리 스스로의 힘으로 하나님을 찾으라 명령하지 않으셨습니다. 오히려 하나님은 자신을 낮추셔서 언약의 백성인 우리를 찾아오셨습니다. 하나님께서 우리와 맺으신 이 새언약은 인간의 의지나 결단이 아니라 하나님의 은혜 위에 세워진 약속입니다. 하나님께서는 이 언약 속에서 “내가 친히 나의 영과 나의 말씀을 너희 안에 두겠다” 라고 약속하십니다. 이 언약은 근본적으로 우리의 신실함에 달린 것이 아니라, 전적으로 하나님의 신실하신 은혜에 달린 하나님의 약속입니다.
이 약속의 아름다움은 이 약속의 영원성에 있습니다. 하나님께서는 잠시 우리를 찾아오셨다가 떠나시는 분이 아니라, 영원히 우리와 함께하시는 분이십니다. 하나님께서 우리의 마음에 친히 심겨주신 성령님은 우리의 마음에서 떠나시지 않으실 것이며, 하나님께서 우리의 입에 심겨주신 그 말씀은 우리와 우리의 자손의 입에서 떠나지 않을 것입니다. 그리고, 이 약속은 예수 그리스도 안에서 완전히 성취되었습니다. 예수님께서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “보혜사, 곧 아버지께서 내 이름으로 보내실 성령께서, 너희에게 모든 것을 가르치고, 내가 너희에게 말한 모든 것을 생각나게 하실 것이다”(요한복음 14:26). 구약의 대언자들에게 임했던 동일한 성령께서 이제 모든 믿는 자 안에 거하시며, 우리 마음을 하나님의 진리의 말씀으로 이끄십니다.
새 언약 백성의 표는 자기 의지로 발현되는 자기 절제가 아니라, 참된 순종을 가능케 하시는 하나님의 영과 말씀의 내주하심입니다. 우리 안에 계신 성령님께서 우리를 신실하게 붙드시고, 우리 마음에 심긴 말씀이 우리를 살아가게 합니다. 그래서 새 언약 백성의 삶은 ‘스스로의 힘으로 자신을 지키는 삶’이 아니라 ‘하나님의 은혜가 지켜주시는 삶’입니다. 하나님께서 친히 보증하십니다. 그분의 구원의 역사는 우리 안에서, 그리고 우리를 통해 “이제부터 영원토록 “ 계속될 것입니다.
Today’s Devotion: Two Marks of New Covenant People — God’s Spirit and Word
Isaiah 59:21 (ESV) “And as for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the Lord: “My Spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your offspring, or out of the mouth of your children’s offspring,” says the Lord, “from this time forth and forevermore.”
When God promises a new covenant, He does not call us to climb up to Him—He comes down to us. The covenant rests not on human strength but on divine grace. Notice how God Himself takes full responsibility: “My Spirit that is upon you … My words that I have put in your mouth … shall not depart.” Every verb emphasizes what He will do, not what we must achieve.
The beauty of this promise is its permanence. God does not merely visit His people for a season; He abides with them forever. “From this time forth and forevermore” declares that His Spirit and His Word will never be taken away. What began as a promise in Isaiah finds its full realization in Christ. Jesus said, “The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you” (John 14:26). The same Spirit who once rested upon the prophets now lives within every believer.
The mark of New Covenant people, then, is not self-discipline alone but the divine indwelling that empowers true obedience. The Spirit within us keeps us faithful, and the Word planted in us keeps us alive. God Himself guarantees that His saving work will continue in us and through us “from this time forth and forevermore.”
