예레미야 12:1–3 (새번역) 주님, 제가 주님과 변론할 때마다, 언제나 주님이 옳으셨습니다. 그러므로 주님께 공정성 문제 [=불평] 한 가지를 여쭙겠습니다. 어찌하여 악인들이 형통하며, 배신자들이 모두 잘 되기만 합니까? 2 주님께서 그들을, 나무를 심듯이 심으셨으므로, 뿌리를 내리고 자라며, 열매도 맺으나, 말로만 주님과 가까울 뿐, 속으로는 주님과 멀리 떨어져 있습니다. 3 그러나 주님, 주님께서는 저를 아십니다. 주님은 저의 속을 들여다보시고, 저의 마음이 주님과 함께 있음을 감찰[=시험]하여 알고 계십니다. 그러므로 그들을 도살할 양처럼 끌어내시고, 죽일 날을 정하셔서 따로 갈라내 두십시오.
예레미야는 모든 신자가 결국 하나님께 묻게 되는 질문을 꺼내 놓습니다. “주님, 왜 악한 사람들이 잘 됩니까?” 그는 악한 일을 행하는 자들이 오히려 뿌리를 내리고 열매를 맺는 나무와 같이 형통하며, 심지어 입으로는 하나님과 가깝지만, 마음은 하나님에게서 멀리 떨어져 있는 위선자들이 잘 나가는 모습을 봤습니다. 이런 현실은 의인의 마음을 흔들고, 때로는 하나님의 공의로우심 마저 의심하게 만들 수 있습니다.
그러나 예레미야는 의문과 불만을 품은 채 하나님께 나아가면서도 “주님이 옳으십니다”라고 먼저 고백합니다. 참된 믿음은 이해되지 않는 상황 속에서도 하나님께서 여전히 선하시고 공의로우시다는 사실을 고백할 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 악인이 형통하는 현실은 하나님의 직무유기가 아니라, 오히려 하나님께서 자신의 백성의 마음을 시험하시고 연단하시기 위해 의도적으로 사용하시는 수단이기 때문입니다.
예레미야는 이 진리를 인정하며 이렇게 말합니다. “주님은 저의 속을 들여다보시고, 저의 마음이 주님과 함께 있음을 감찰[=시험]하여 알고 계십니다.” 하나님께서는 우리의 눈 앞에서 악인이 번성할 때, 우리의 믿음의 본질이 드러난다는 사실을 잘 알고 계십니다. 우리는 순간 순간 바뀌는 우리의 환경을 신뢰하고 있습니까? 아니면, 영원히 변하지 않으시는 정의롭고 선하신 하나님을 신뢰하고 있습니까? 악인의 형통이 우리 눈 앞에 보이는 순간들은 우리의 믿음이 “하나님 본인”에게 뿌리를 두고 있는지, 아니면 하나님께 주시는 “복들”에 뿌리를 두고 있는지를 밝히 드러냅니다.
우리는 여기에서 악인의 형통이 오직 일시적이라는 사실을 기억해야 합니다. 하나님께서 그들이 한동안 번성하도록 허락하실 수는 있지만, 그렇다고 그들의 악을 못 본 척하시는 것은 아닙니다. 그래서 예레미야는 “그들을 도살할 양처럼 끌어내십시오”라고 기도하며, 회개하지 않는 모든 마음을 하나님께서 심판하실 날이 반드시 온다는 사실을 기억합니다. 성경은 악인들은 빠르게 성공하는 만큼, 아주 빠르게 파멸될 것이라는 진리를 반복해서 선포합니다.
시편 1:6 그렇다. 의인의 길은 주님께서 인정하시지만, 악인의 길은 망할 것이다.
시편 37:1–2 악한 자들이 잘 된다고 해서 속상해하지 말며, 불의한 자들이 잘 산다고 해서 시새워하지 말아라. 그들은 풀처럼 빨리 시들고, 푸성귀처럼 사그라지고 만다.
시편 73:18–19 주님께서 그들을 미끄러운 곳에 세우시며, 거기에서 넘어져서 멸망에 이르게 하십니다. 그들이 갑자기 놀라운 일을 당하고, 공포에 떨면서 자취를 감추며, 마침내 끝장을 맞이합니다.
이 진리가 우리에게 시사하는 바는 무엇입니까?
우리는 하나님께 순종하며 살려고 애쓰는 신자들이 번성하지 못하는 반면, 하나님을 경외하지 않는 자들이 쉽게 성공하고 편안하게 살아가는 모습을 보게 될 때 마음이 흔들릴 수 있습니다. 그러나 성경은 하나님께서 악인의 형통을 잠시 허락하시는 것은 우리를 낙심시키기 위한 것이 아니라, 우리의 믿음이 진짜인지 드러내기 위함이라고 말합니다. 하나님은 그들의 성공을 우리의 눈앞에 두심으로 우리의 마음을 연단하시고, 우리가 매 순간 바뀌는 상황이 아닌, 하나님을 신뢰하고 있는지 시험하십니다.
그렇기 때문에 우리는 악인들의 성공 앞에서 낙심할 필요가 없습니다. 악인의 번영은 잠깐이지만 하나님께서 우리 안에 세워 가시는 믿음은 영원합니다. 하나님은 우리의 상황을 보시며, 우리의 중심을 아시고, 우리의 마음이 어려운 시기마저도 우리를 더 깊은 신뢰와 흔들리지 않는 순종의 자리로 이끌고 계십니다.
그러니, 오늘도 흔들리지 말고 하나님을 바라보십시오. 악인들의 형통 조차 하나님께서 우리의 마음을 사랑으로 단련하시고, 우리를 성숙한 믿음의 사람으로 빚어 가시는 하나님의 은혜입니다.

Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and set them apart for the day of slaughter.
Jeremiah voices a question every believer eventually brings to God: “Why do the wicked prosper?” He sees ungodly people taking root, thriving, and even speaking God’s name while their hearts remain far from Him. Their success is so visible and so troubling that it tempts the righteous to doubt God’s justice.
Yet Jeremiah responds with remarkable faith. He brings his complaint directly to God, and begins with the confession, “Righteous are You, O Lord.” Even when he cannot understand God’s ways, he refuses to question God’s character. This is the heart of true faith. The prosperity of the wicked is not a sign of God’s neglect; it is often the very situation God uses to test and purify the hearts of His people.
Jeremiah acknowledges this when he says, “You see me, and test my heart toward You.” God uses seasons of confusion—especially when evil appears to flourish—to reveal what we truly trust. Will we cling to God even when circumstances feel unfair? Will we rest in His righteousness when life seems upside-down? Such moments expose whether our faith is grounded in God Himself or in the blessings we hope He will give.
But Jeremiah also reminds us that the prosperity of the wicked is temporary. God may allow them to flourish for a season, but He is not blind to their deeds. Jeremiah prays, “Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter,” acknowledging the coming day when God will judge every unrepentant heart. Scripture consistently affirms this truth: evildoers may rise quickly, but they fall just as quickly under God’s judgment.
Psalm 1:6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
Psalm 37:1–2 Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb.
Psalm 73:18–19 Truly you set them [=the wiccked] in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors!
So what does this mean for us today?
When we see ungodly people rise in influence or comfort while we struggle in obedience, our hearts are tempted to question God’s fairness. Yet Scripture shows that God Himself allows the wicked to prosper for a time, not to discourage us, but to reveal the true nature of our faith. He places their success before our eyes as a refining fire. Will we trust His character more than our circumstances? Will we cling to His promises when the world seems upside down?
And this is why we must not lose heart. The prosperity of the wicked is fleeting, but the faith God is forming in you will last forever. He sees your struggle, knows your heart, and is using even this season to draw you deeper into trust and steadfast obedience.
