이사야 59:1–15
이스라엘은 대체 왜 길을 잃고 하나님께로부터 멀어졌을까요? 이사야는 그 이유를 분명하게 말합니다.
“성실[=진리]이 사라지니, 악에서 떠난 자가 오히려 약탈을 당합니다” (15절).
이스라엘 백성의 사회 안에 진리가 사라졌을 때, 정의와 공의가 뒤로 물러나고, 신실과 정직이 고꾸러졌습니다 (14절). 15절에서 “성실”로 번역된 단어는 단순한 정직함을 의미할 뿐 아니라, 결코 변하지 않는 “진리”를 의미합니다. 이스라엘이 이 진리를 잃었을 때, 정의와 평화도 함께 사라졌습니다. 이스라엘 백성은 여전히 기도했지만, 하나님께 들어올린 그들의 손에는 피가 묻어 있었고(3절), 자신의 문제에 대해서는 정의를 구했지만, 동시에 그들은 법정에서 밥먹듯이 거짓 증언을 했습니다 (4절). 그들은 겉으로는 경건해 보였지만, 그들의 마음은 하나님께로 부터 아주 멀리 떨어져 있었습니다. 그들의 문제는 하나님께서 약해지셨거나, 침묵하셨던 것이 아니었습니다. 주님의 손은 여전히 강했고, 그들을 구원하실 능력은 충분하셨습니다 (1절). 진짜 문제는 그들이 자신들을 하나님께로 이끄는 진리 자체를 버렸다는 데 있었습니다.
진리가 사라진 사회에서는 의로운 사람들조차 고통받습니다. 이사야는 악에서 떠난 자가 오히려 공격받아 약탈을 당하는 세상을 그립니다 (15절). 정직하게 살면 손해를 보고, 부패를 거절하면 오히려 고립되는 현실입니다. 진리가 사라지면 정의는 이익에 밀려나고, 거짓이 생존의 방식이 됩니다. 사람들은 속지 않기 위해 먼저 속이고, 이용당하지 않기 위해 먼저 이용합니다. 결국 올바르게 살려는 사람이 가장 큰 희생을 치르게 됩니다.
그러나 하나님께서는 여전히 자신의 백성에게 진리 위에 굳게 서라고 부르십니다. 아무리 대가가 크더라도 진리는 반드시 회복되어야 합니다. 진리가 무너지면 공의와 의, 그리고 평화도 함께 무너집니다. 하지만 우리가 다시 진리인 하나님의 말씀으로 돌아갈 때, 그 말씀은 우리의 죄를 드러낼 뿐 아니라 우리를 거룩하게 소생시킵니다. 예수님께서는 아버지께 이렇게 기도하셨습니다: “그들을 진리로 거룩하게 하옵소서. 아버지의 말씀은 진리니이다” (요한복음 17:17). 하나님의 말씀은 우리 안의 잘못을 비추어 보게 하실 뿐 아니라, 우리를 거룩하게 하여 하나님께 속한 사람으로 굳게 세우십니다.
우리는 어떻게 해야 이스라엘처럼 길을 잃어 하나님으로 부터 멀어지지 않을 수 있을까요? 하나님의 진리, 곧 그분의 말씀을 굳게 붙드는 것입니다.
Isaiah 59:1–15
Why did Israel go astray? Isaiah gives a simple but piercing answer:
“Truth is lacking, and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey.” (v. 15)
When truth fell in the public square, justice was pushed aside, and righteousness stood far away (v. 14). The absence of truth did not only corrupt the nation’s institutions; it also poisoned everyday life. People still prayed, but their hands were covered with blood (v. 3). They still sought justice, but their courts were filled with lies (v. 4). Outwardly they looked religious, yet their hearts no longer sought God. The problem was never that God had grown weak or silent. His hand was still strong to save (v. 1). The real problem was that His people had turned away from the truth that once bound them to Him.
When truth disappears from a society, even the righteous become victims. Isaiah paints a grim picture of a world where anyone who turns from evil becomes a target (v. 15). To live with integrity was to invite trouble. To refuse corruption was to stand alone. Where truth is missing, self-interest replaces justice, and deceit becomes the rule of survival. People harm one another before being harmed themselves. In such a world, those who seek to do what is right often suffer the most.
Yet God’s message through Isaiah still calls His people to stand firm. Truth must be restored, no matter the cost. When truth collapses, everything else collapses with it—justice, righteousness, and peace. But when we return to God’s Word and let it shape our hearts again, that same truth exposes our sin and brings renewal. Jesus prayed to the Father, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17). God’s Word not only reveals what is wrong in us but also makes us holy, setting us apart for Him.
How can we, then, keep ourselves from going astray like Israel did? By clinging to His truth, that is, His word.
